Hypnosis Trance work and Hypnotherapy
Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist in Plymouth

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy have a reputation for making remarkable positive changes in people’s lives. In fact, a good hypnotist or hypnotherapist can make all the difference in things such as weight loss or stopping smoking as well as many other problems.

I have taken three major trainings as a hypnotherapist, as well a number of specialist courses. In fact I have been trained by, and also assisted two of the world’s most famous and effective hypnotists: Dr Richard Bandler and Paul McKenna. I have also taken a specialist course in one of the most highly effective ways of stopping people smoking.

Demystifying Hypnotherapy

The reputation that hypnotists and hypnotherapists have is well deserved in many ways. There are however some common misunderstandings about hypnotherapy.

Some people come for hypnotherapy because they think it will just magically change them without them having to make any effort themselves. They think the hypnotist or hypnotherapist is going to give them a brain or personality transplant! This is just not how it works. There are some techniques that can make changes against a person’s will, but they are rather harsh. They mostly rely on lying to people or threatening them. Unless it is a matter of life and death, I refuse to use these techniques. In fact, without these, a hypnotist or hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything that you do not already really want to do.

What hypnotherapy can do though, is to draw out the wonderful power and ability of your unconscious mind. So if you really want something, hypnotherapy will help to focus your mind so you are far more likely to get it. In this way, it really can bring about surprising miraculous changes in people’s lives.

Another misunderstanding about hypnosis is that some people expect it to be like having a general anaesthetic. Sometimes, they are aware of what is going on around them and they are aware that they can think. They then think to themselves “I am still thinking. I wonder if I am actually in hypnosis?” The truth is that hypnosis is not sleep. I actually want my clients to stay awake while they are in trance. Trance is actually a state of concentration, rather like reading a good book. In fact while someone is going into a trance, they often become far more aware of their surroundings for a while, before they start to relax and pay attention to my suggestions.

How I use Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

I use hypnosis extensively to help people to stop smoking and for slimming or weight loss. However in both cases I will use other methods first. This is both to pave the way and to find out what suggestions the person needs during hypnosis.

I do not use formal hypnosis very often during ordinary therapy or coaching sessions. Some hypnotists will use standard hypnotic scripts, but this is a bit of a ‘one size fits all’ approach. A good hypnotherapist will always find out the client’s needs and then design the trance around those needs instead of using a script.

I myself use a number of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques as well as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and various other techniques rather than hypnosis. These are often quicker and more effective than ordinary hypnosis.

Many of the techniques I use could justifiably be labelled as ‘eyes open’ hypnotic techniques. Interestingly in Paul McKenna’s Sky TV series ‘I can change your life’ where he dealt with people with a very wide range of problems, he only used formal hypnosis on about one person in three, and even then, from knowing how he works, it was clear to me that he was mostly using it to ‘glue in the changes’ he had already made. Otherwise, he was using the same powerful ‘eyes open’ techniques of NLP that I use.

I use a similar approach. I use NLP and other techniques where most appropriate and I use hypnosis and trance work when it is requested or required.
